Balourdet Quartet
The Old Steeple and Eureka Chamber Music Series enter into a first-time collaboration, bringing the 2024 Avery Fisher Career Grant winning Balourdet Quartet to Ferndale for an immersive presentation combining live music and a panel discussion about freedom, history, and the role of art in society.
In our increasingly fractured and polarized society, the arts are one of the few activities that can help to bridge the divide and bring us together. Music has an uncanny way of celebrating our differences while illuminating our common humanity. The Balourdet Quartet and ECMS artistic director Tom Stone will present musical selections and a discussion of music in the context of the historical events that inspire and shape it.

The Hanneke Cassel Band
Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel’s fiddle music fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations. She has performed and traveled across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Hanneke’s music is a blend of the contemporary and traditional, described by the Boston Globe as “exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.” The Hanneke Cassel Band features Tristan Clarridge on cello and Yann Falquet on guitar. Multi-instrumentalist, 5 -time Grand National Fiddle Champion, and pioneering cellist, Tristan Clarridge creatively synthesizes traditional folk influences with rhythmic vocabulary from jazz, rock and pop music, and is leading a revolution among adventurous young cellists throughout the USA and beyond. He has toured the world with bluegrass/nu-folk sensation Crooked Still and Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings, as well as Mike Marshall, Bruce Molsky and Cape Breton fiddle phenomenon Natalie MacMaster. Yann Falquet is a dynamic Québécois guitarist in the world of traditional music. Co-founder of Québec-based traditional music trio Genticorum, he is versatile artist who continues to deepen his knowledge of both creation and interpretation.

Early James
Early James recorded his first two Easy Eye Sound albums, Singing For My Supper (2020) and Strange Time To Be Alive (2022), at the studio inside the vaunted label’s Nashville headquarters. But for James’ third release, Medium Raw, producer and Easy Eye Sound label head Dan Auerbach envisioned something quite different for the Alabama-bred singer-songwriter-guitarist’s rawboned, sometimes scarifying music.

Iris DeMent
On her transcendent new record, Workin' On A World, Iris DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe, pandemic illness, and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world, but implores us to love each other, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces.
